Due to the marathon season coming up, there have been a lot of discussions based on What are Shin Splints? And I am writing this article to conclude my final thoughts on this subject. Shin Splints are basically a lower leg injury that have been affecting athletes, runners and basically anyone that is involved in excessive physical activity for a long period of time. The injury is based on doing too much too soon. If you are pushing yourself at work, or doing excessive workouts and basically putting a lot of pressure on yourself then you can be a subject to a dreadful injury known as Shin Splints. Basically, it is something that you need to avoid and to do that you can take certain precautions. If you are unable to then in such a case there are numerous treatment options available. I will discuss that later in my article.
First of all, lets begin with understanding what are shin splints. They are formed from constant pounding of the muscles in your lower leg (tibia). What happens is that when someone indulges in a physical activity and over does it, that causes the muscles to swell and when that keeps happening over and over again eventually that causes Shin Splints. It is not a pretty picture, although most cases are mild, shin splints in their worse form can get extremely painful so it is a good idea to watch out for them in the first place. You should try to keep your activity in limits. If you really need to do a lot of physical work that involves movement of your legs, or if you are training for a marathon or just working out in general than the rule of thumb is to increase your intensity gradually. If you are patient and work your way up instead of throwing it all down at once then you can protect yourself. The human body is very adaptable but it needs time to get used to something of this nature. If you don’t go slow you are really putting yourself at risk for not only shin splints but many other lower leg injuries.
There is always a right way to do things, granted we can be impatient and try to get results fast but this in return can result in you developing shin splints and being on rest for quite some time. It is important to develop a good understanding of what are shin splints in order to watch out for them. There can be several precautions taken such as wearing proper apparel, watching out for flat feet etc.. Some people can be more prone than others so the circumstances for developing this injury vary from one person to another.
Just take it easy and increase gradually. You will be fine!
